Tillman Hall
Building Description
Tillman Hall is one of the most well known buildings on the Clemson Campus. The Eugene T. Moore School of Education, Calhoun Honors College, and the Technology and Human Resources are all in Tillman Hall. There is also an auditorium that is utilized for guest speakers and presenters. Sitting in the front of the building is a statue of Thomas Green Clemson. The Tillman tower has a clock that chimes every 15 minutes with a 47 bell carillon. Tillman Hall can also be found on the National Register of Historic Places.
History
Tillman Hall was dedicated in 1891 when it was initially known as the Agricultural Building. Unfortunately a large part of the building was burned by a fired on May 22, 1894. After its remodeling it was known as the Main Building for about 50 years. Later, in 1946, the Board of Trustees decided to name the building Tillman Hall. The building was named after Benjamin Ryan Tillman. Mr. Tillman had notable positions as the governor of South Carolina from 1890-1895, US Senator from 1895-1918, and Life Trustee of Clemson Agricultural College from 1888-1918.
