Silcox Physical Education and Health Center
Building Description
The Silcox Physical Education and Health Center is a 42,911 square foot facility dedicated to the fitness of students at the College of Charleston. Along with housing offices for the Department of Health and Human Performance, Silcox is a multi-purpose fitness center. The complex includes 3 gymnasiums with 6 basketball courts, 4 volleyball courts, and 6 badminton courts. Other specialized fitness facilities include 8 racquetball courts, 6 lighted tennis courts, an indoor track, a gymnastics room, a dance studio, and strength and conditioning area. The strength and conditioning area is complete with free weights, weight machines, stationary bikes, rowing machines, stair climbers, and treadmills. The Silcox Center also consists of classrooms and various human performance laboratories.
History
The Silcox Physical Education and Health Center was completed in 1939. At the time it was built, it was known as the College of Charleston Athletics Center. The building was named in honor of former College of Charleston basketball coach, Willard A. Silcox. The building underwent a $3.3 million renovation in 1995.
