Hendricks's Chapel
Building Description
Hendricks's Chapel is a central figure to the Syracuse University Campus. Located directly on the quad, it opened its doors to the University community following its construction in September of 1930. Since its opening nearly 80 years ago, it is a welcoming worship center of many different faith traditions and its staff invites everyone to express fully their beliefs and practices within its walls.
Hendricks's provides opportunities to get involved in the community as well as other offerings. These include grabbing a cup of coffee from the student-run coffee shop, viewing and listening to one of their choirs, attending a lecture or concert, or simply just sitting on the steps.
It's stunning presence, inside and out, graces the confines of the University. It is a place for students to relax, talk, and do homework, a place for anyone to enjoy the presentation of their many events, a place for worship, celebration, and mourning, and a place where anyone is welcome.
History
Hendricks Chapel is a gift from Senator Francis Hendricks, former Syracuse mayor and long-time Syracuse University trustee; he left the university $500,000 to build a memorial chapel (which, in its entirety, cost $600,000) in memory of his deceased wife, Eliza Jane Hendricks. The brick and limestone structure was built in a style that can be traced to the work of the 16th century Italian architect Palladio, and to the Roman Pantheon.
Over the years, the Chapel has undergone a few renovations. It has since added a new suite for the Dean, six offices, two lounges, and a kitchen to the Chapel's working space. In 1999, renovation began on the main office suite and the Noble Room. The Noble Room is now equipped with a large screen projection system, internet, and a small stage area with lighting for lectures and performances. It is also equipped to display works of art.
