Biological Sciences Building

Building Description

The front entrance of the Biological Sciences Building is surrounded by four pillars, which span the height of the building. In between the pillars, three different concrete ornaments labeled botany, zoology, and forestry describe the building’s original use. Located between the Gross Chemistry Building and the French Sciences Center, Biological Sciences houses the undergraduate Department of Biology and various other affiliated departments. The building’s first floor consists of lecture halls, classrooms, and the Biological & Environmental Sciences Library. The two upper floors mainly consist of faculty offices and biological laboratories for student and faculty use.

History

The Biological Sciences Building first opened in 1961 as a research facility for botany, zoology, and forestry. It gradually began taking on a more comprehensive scope of biological sciences, including systematics, population genetics and evolution, animal physiology and functional morphology. As part of the Biology Department’s initiative to be a leader in botanical sciences, the Biological Sciences Greenhouse was built to be a diverse collection of plants for research and education.
