The Keith and Brenda Brodie Recreation Center
Building Description
Considered the hub of athletics on the freshman dominated East Campus, the Brodie Recreation Center includes a gymnasium, a weight room, basketball and racquetball courts, a pool, an indoor track, and ping pong areas. There are classes offered from aerobics to swimming to yoga and beyond.
History
Opened in 1996 the Brodie Recreation Center is the East Campus’ main recreational attraction. The center cost $5million to complete and is over 50,000 square feet. Named for former Duke President, Keith Brodie, and his wife Brenda, the facility contains two gymnasiums, multiple basketball courts, a swimming pool, indoor track, a weight room, an aerobics studio, ping pong areas, and a multipurpose room. The 25 yard long pool is being upgraded for the 2006-2007 school year.
The Brodie Recreation Center was originally Memorial Gymnasium. Built in 1922-1923, Memorial Gymnasium was named to honor Trinity student who died in World War I. The original Memorial Gymnasium is now an integral part of the Brodie Recreation Center.
