Fitzpatrick Center
Building Description
The Fitzpatrick Center is known as CIEMAS (Center for Interdisciplinary Engineering, Medicine and Applied Sciences) and it supports specialized teaching and research initiatives in bioengineering, photonics, communications and materials sciences and materials engineering. It is a 322,000 square-foot center of two three-story buildings. The west building houses the Fitzpatrick Center for Photonics and Communications.
History
The Fitzpatrick Center was completed in August 2004, beginning in May 2002. It cost Duke University over $90 million. It is largely considered the face of the Pratt School of Engineering and Dean Kristina Johnson’s huge accomplishment in vaulting Pratt into the engineering spotlight. The Fitzpatrick Center more than doubled the available square footage of the engineering school and it is often a large reason for engineering students to decide to attend Duke.
