Lilly Library

Building Description

Lilly Library is the main East Campus branch of Duke’s extensive library system. While Perkins is undergoing renovation, Bostock Library and Lilly Library will help to give students and staff places to work and research. The building is home to a computer lab, group study and individual study venues including the Thomas Room, and audio/video equipment for students and faculty to use. There are over 17,000 films and videos in the Lilly Library collection. The philosophy research section of Duke University Libraries is also included in Lilly Library. Also, many of Duke’s other collections of books and research materials find Lilly Library as their home.

History

Lilly Library was finished in 1968 after three-stages spanning forty years. The building was designated to be renovated at the end of the 1990’s as part of the “Perkins Project.” In order to replace the library temporarily, Bostock Library was constructed and opened its doors on October 12, 2005 and is currently serving as the main branch for the Duke Library system. On that date, Perkins Library closed its doors so that it could be renovated. The schedule for renovation will have the first floor of Perkins re-opened by the middle of 2006.
