Duke Chapel
Building Description
The Duke University Chapel is considered the heart of Duke Campus. The chapel was the first building planned for Duke University, but was actually the last one to be completed. The construction began in 1930 and was completed in 1935. The chapels design and architecture is not a copy of other specific buildings, but it was inspired by English cathedrals and chapels at other universities across America.
The architect Julian Abele and chief designer Horace Trumbaer firm combined to construct one of the most beautiful chapels in the United States. Julian Abele was America’s first famous black architect and studied at the University of Pennsylvania.
The chapel has incurred two major changes since its construction. A fire in 1971 burned down several pews in the first row. Instead of replacing these pews, the University decided to use chairs in order to accommodate orchestras and other performances that take place in the chapel. The second major change came with the installation of the Flentrop organ. Other changes include several exterior repairs.
The Chapel has been the heart of Duke University since its construction and remains to be the most beautiful building on campus.
