Krzyzewskiville

Building Description

Krzyzewskiville, or K-ville for short, is an outdoor area where students camp out in tents while waiting to gain admission to the most popular Duke Blue Devils home basketball games, especially against archrival UNC-Chapel Hill. Located outside Cameron Indoor Stadium on the lawn between Wilson West Campus Recreation Center and Ambler Stadium, K-ville houses 100 tents at capacity. Each tent holds between eight to twelve people, and all students are able to participate in this Duke University tradition. K-ville is open for tenting from the time that students arrive back on campus for the Spring semester in early January until the last officially designated “tenting game.”

History

Named after the Duke Blue Devils’ iconic head basketball coach, Mike Krzyzewski, the first K-ville was started in 1986 before the Duke-UNC basketball game held at Cameron Indoor Stadium that year. This phenomenon caught on with the student body and quickly became a student tradition at Duke. The Duke Student Government (DSG) soon became involved with regulating K-ville. Although K-ville originally existed as a way to wait in line for the Duke-UNC game, another additional game is designated as a “tenting game” each college basketball season. DSG also instituted policies that required regular, periodic checks to make sure a certain number of students were in each tent to keep that tent’s spot in line for each tenting game. The rules of K-ville have evolved over time to include many other policies to ensure that each tent’s position in line fairly represents its dedication to the tenting games.
