Baldwin Auditorium
Building Description
Baldwin Auditorium, the most prominent building on East Campus, is the location of most musical productions by faculty artists, Duke's Ciomi Quartet, and many guest jazz, folk, and world artists. Located at the top of what was once a horse track the architecture of Baldwin is reminiscent of UVA's rotunda as both use Georgian style architecture. However, Baldwin is unique in its construction because of its dome within a dome. The smaller dome, visible from inside, has a skylight while the larger dome looms above. Baldwin Auditorium contains 895 seats.
History
Built between 1926 and 1930, Baldwin Auditorium was originally called "The Auditorium on the Women's College Quadrangle." In 1964, the auditorium was renamed Baldwin Auditorium in honor of Dean Alice Mary Baldwin. Dean Baldwin came to Trinity College in 1923 as the Dean of Women and was the first woman to achieve full faculty status. Dean Baldwin's legacy has been cemented on the most visible building of Duke's East campus. Today, Baldwin Auditorium is home to many musical events of Duke resident artists, Duke students, local musicians, and internationally acclaimed musicians.
