Aggasiz Theatre
Building Description
Agassiz Theatre is managed by the Office of the Arts at Harvard with the purpose of integrating creative thinking and expression into the undergraduate experience. The theatre serves as a performance space for plays which students select, direct, produce, perform and occasionally write. It stands within the Agassiz House, which houses other facilities in addition to the theatre. It is small in size relative to other theatres on campus, with one tier of seating in a semi-circle surrounding the stage and an open balcony, which gives it a charming and intimate feel.
History
The Agassiz House, which was built in 1904, is now operated by the Radcliffe Institute, which has a long history of support for the theater. Stage greats such as Eugene O'Neill, Philip Barry, Stockard Channing, Peter Sellars and John Lithgow are among those who got their start at the Agassiz. Each year, approximately 750 students are involved in Agassiz Theatre Productions, and thousands more attend them.
