Berman Institute of Bioethics

Building Description

The Berman Institute for Bioethics serves to answer many of the most important questions raised from cutting edge research in fields such as stem cell research and many others. The Genetics and Public Policy center is closely affiliated with the Berman Institute and strives to affect policy decisions in Washington DC. The Institute is an independent, interdisciplinary center that serves the entire Johns Hopkins University and Health System and brings the moral dimensions of health policy, medical care and biology. To inform genetic policy decisions, the Center surveys public attitudes about genetics issues, conducts analyses of the regulatory landscape, and discusses the outcomes of key genetics policies and possible changes in policy.

History

The Berman Institute of Bioethics was established in 1995 and is home to the Schools of Medicine, Nursing and Public Health. The center was established in 1995, from funding from an endowment that was established by Phoebe Rhea Berman. She believed that Johns Hopkins is the best place to pursue research in the field of ethics and medical discovery.
