Memorial Stadium
Building Description
Memorial Stadium is the home to the Jayhawk Football Team. The stadium’s official capacity is 50,071 although the horshoe shape allows tailgaters to view the game from the Campanile hill to the south. Other than football, the stadium also hosts the Kansas Relays track and field event, which sees top area high school and intercollegiate competitors. The field itself is made of an AstroPlay surface named Kivisto Field.
History
Memorial Stadium was built in 1920 funded by students, faculty, and fans. It was dedicated as a memorial to the Kansas students who fought and died in World War I. It was the first stadium built on a college campus west of the Mississippi River, making it the seventh oldest collegiate stadium in the country.
