South Tower

Building Description

South Tower is a Residence Hall for sororities located on the University of South Carolina campus. Completed in 1965, the building itself is 20 stories high and houses around 400 women. It is a traditional residence hall with lounges, kitchens, and laundry rooms located on every floor. South Tower is located close to dining facilities located in Patterson Hall and the Russell House. Sororities represented in South Tower include Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Gamma, Delta Sigma Theta, Kappa Alpha Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta.

History

At the time it was built in 1965, South Tower was the tallest building on campus. With one of the highest number of residents of any residential hall on campus, it houses around 400 women at any given time.

A garden located behind South Tower was dedicated to Andrew C. Moore, who served as dean of the University of South Carolina under President Samuel Chiles Mitchell and was also acting president of the University from 1908-1909 and 1913-1914. Before being president, Moore was also head of the Department of Biology, Geology, and Mineralogy.
