Mission Church

Building Description

Mission Church is a beautifully constructed building which resembles a Romanic architectural design. It is built of bright white stone and has brilliant golden archways for entrances and exits. When visitors and students enter the University from the main road, Mission Church is one of the first buildings they will see. At night, the front is lit up with lights, making for a gorgeous sight at dusk amidst the surrounding palm trees. On most days except Saturday, the church holds a noon mass, with additional mass sessions on Sundays.

History

The origins of Mission Church date back all the way to 1777, 74 years earlier than the founding of Santa Clara University in 1851. It was originally used by Spanish settlers in the California Valley area as a missionary to convert local natives and Indians—the Ohlones. Back then it was made out of wood, but since then, it was renovated and boasts its whitewashed adobe walls, even to this day. In its history, it has been used for religious and social purposes; in the mid-1800’s it was used as a dance hall. The University eventually purchased the church in 1860. Though the building has endured many hardships, such as earthquakes and violent storms, it continues to serve Santa Clara University, the Town of Santa Clara and San Jose for worship and special occasions, such as weddings.
