Robert Fetzer Field

Building Description

Fetzer Field is carved out of UNC’s central campus, adjacent to Carmichael Auditorium and the Carmichael Dormitory. The northern entrance feeds from South Road, which is where almost the entire fan base enters the field. It seats just over 5,000 people, which is usually large enough to support the amount of people for the sporting events that take place here. There’s seating on only one side of the field, and the stands are metal bleachers. The field itself is a lush green and is enclosed by a ¼ mile track.

History

Fetzer Field opened over 70 years ago in 1935, and is named after former Athletic Director Robert Fetzer. Since then it has become the home to numerous Carolina athletic teams: men’s and women’s track and field in 1935, men’s soccer in 1947, men’s lacrosse in 1949, women’s soccer in 1979, and women’s lacrosse in 1996. It has also hosted some of the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championships. Perhaps the most incredible aspect of Fetzer Field is the fact that it is the home to the UNC Women’s Soccer team, who has posted a mind-boggling 629-28-18 record since its inception in 1979, coupled with 19 NCAA National Championship titles.
