Scott Stadium

Building Description

Scott Stadium is the home of the Virginia Cavaliers football team. It is on the UVA West Grounds on Alderman Road. Capacity is over 60,000.

History

Constructed in 1931, Scott Stadium is the oldest stadium in Virginia. Coats and ties for men and sundresses for women are the traditional wear for all games, but this has been largely replaced by a controversial “sea of orange”, where fans wear orange clothing to show their support for the Cavaliers. A Facebook group has even been started to protest this new idea that goes against the grain of UVA tradition.

A mounted Cavalier opens each game by riding in a horse to the accompaniment of music and fireworks, after the ceremonial slaying of the opposing teams mascot in a short skit that takes place on the video screen prior to each game.

In 2000 a massive renovation took place which added 20,000 seats to the stadium and which was responsible for the longer name of the stadium, as Carl Smith was the man that made it possible.

The Rolling Stones played a concert in a packed stadium here in 2005.

A new scoreboard and larger video screen is forthcoming in 2008.
