Union South

Building Description

Union South opened in the 1970's to meet the demands of a growing campus. Its sharp angles and soaring atrium give the space a modern flavor which is complemented by a variety of specialized resources including guest rooms, a bowling alley, Club 770 student night club and a food court. Union South is conveniently located near Camp Randall stadium and serves as the home for the traditional football Saturday Badger Bash tailgates. The building houses more than a dozen meeting rooms of all sizes for your event needs, including the larger Varsity Room, Dag Hammarskjold Hall, and Einstein's Food Court.

History

The Union South is part of the University of Wisconsin Union. The Wisconsin Union, often referred to as "the heart and soul" of the University, has enhanced the lives of members and visitors since it was founded in 1907. The Union is based on the principle that the University of Wisconsin-Madison experience should involve learning outside the classroom.
An estimated 15,000 students, faculty, staff, Union members and guests eat, meet, learn and relax in the two Union locations daily: Memorial Union, on the shore of beautiful Lake Mendota, and Union South, in the heart of the southern part of campus near Camp Randall Stadium.

The Wisconsin Union has historically blended study and leisure, providing recreational, cultural, educational, and social opportunities. Union events, programs, and services continue to showcase this ideal today.

In the fall of 2006, students passed the Student Union Initiative that secured funding to preserve Memorial Union through historic restoration and to reconstruct Union South. The current Union South will soon be recycled and a new south campus union will take its place nearly doubling in size and vitality.
